The 18 independent regional hospice regattas are allied in a national
organization which aims to
increase fundraising and publicity for hospice care.
The National Hospice Regatta Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization
that facilitates existing and new regional regattas. It raises sponsor
money for the National Hospice Regatta Championship, hosts the championship
in order to more broadly publicize hospice care, and distributes championship
net proceeds to the regional regattas.
Hospices help adults and children who are terminally ill, without
regard to ability to pay. They also help family members and friends
while a loved one is dying, and provide bereavement care after the
person has died.
Hospice care is a philosophy and service that recognizes death as
a part of life. A personalized, medically-directed team program treats
and comforts terminally ill patients and their families, at home or
in a home-like setting. The medical goals are symptom control and
pain management, while psychological and spiritual needs also are
individually addressed. Hospice helps everyone involved make the most
of the remaining time on their own terms. Hospice regattas parallel
hospice care in many ways. Teamwork. Preparation, physical and mental.
Risk. Determination. Emotional commitment. Courage and flexibility,
facing the unknown.
