12th Annual Regatta & Famous Clam Bake Sails with Success HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. celebrated their 12th annual Regatta and Famous Clam Bake, Saturday, May 17, 2008 hosted by honorary chair Mayor Jim Naugle and Master of Ceremonies Craig Setzer, channel CBS 4. Over 75 colorful sails soared in the Fort Lauderdale ocean wind complimenting this popular occasion to raise funds for HospiceCare.
This one of a kind Clambake was back due to popular demand and opened with exquisite cuisine including lobsters, steamed clams, Matusalem Rum bars at every corner and a silent auction featuring private boat charters, an exclusive February Point Estate vacation, Carroll’s jewelers amongst other irresistible baskets. The guests complimented the festive seafood dinner which was presented by Tropical Acres. As the evening continued, Hospice Regatta 2008, danced to the steel drum band, “Nori Nori”, who have been entertaining us since the Regatta began in 1997.
All sailboats set sail at 11 a.m. on a twelve mile challenging course. This provided some tough competition in a relaxed atmosphere offering a variety in classes and skill levels for a worthy cause: the care of patients and families facing end of life decisions. The overall 2008 regatta winner, Stuart Hebb, “Thin Ice”, qualifies as HospiceCare of Southeast Florida’s representative at the Hospice Regattas National Championship in 2009. Two special awards presented were the Robert “Skip” Hershberger Sportsmanship awarded to Dave Wallace, “Bandana” and the Wes Holmes Memorial “Spirit of Hospice” Award presented by Gulfstream Sailing Club to Hans Conrad, “Karma”.
The Regatta is a volunteer driven event and all proceeds benefit the patients and families of HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. HospiceCare is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing physical, emotional and spiritual care to individuals and their families coping with end of life decisions. Founded in 1981, H.C.S.E. serves Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe County residents in private homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities or wherever the patient calls "home". Bougainvilla, an eight-bed hospice facility in Ft. Lauderdale, provides housing and care to individuals who are not able to remain at home. In addition to patient services, HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc., offers bereavement counseling, programs for children and adolescents and a variety of community outreach and educational programs to the medical community, schools, business groups and organizations.

HospiceCare Regatta Sails with Success raising over 50K !!!
Ft. Lauderdale, FL……….Saturday, May 19th, 2007, HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. celebrated their 11th annual Regatta and Island Festival. Beautiful waters, ocean wind and sunny skies, complimented this occasion as almost 70 sailboats were racing to raise funds for HospiceCare raising over $50,000. Presenting this year’s awards was honorary chair, Craig Setzer with CBS 4, a proud annual participant in the Hospice Regatta. Highlights during the awards ceremony was the recognition given to Kohl Brinkman, for his contribution of the touching story, “Sunset”, written when he was fourteen years old and the recipient of the Wes Holmes Spirit of Hospice Award, Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club, raising $10,000 for HospiceCare. “We thank the sailing community for their support of our annual Regatta along with all of our sponsors. After 11 years, it is wonderful to see so many skipper’s return, and we welcome all the new participants. It is because of them that this event is so successful.” Susan G. This one of a kind Island Festival featured delicious island cuisine, Matusalem Rum bars at every corner, and a silent auction with items including everything from a Carnival five day cruise to signed Willard Bond art. Hospice Regatta 2007 danced to the steel drum band, “NoriNori” who have been entertaining us since the Regatta started in 1997. “Chillin’ in the Islands” buffet stations were presented by Hugh McCauley, and the staff of Hugh’s Catering. The Hospice Regatta, known for the relaxed yet competitive sailing and Caribbean atmosphere on Esplanade Park, has grown into an extremely popular event. The Regatta started about 11 AM off the Fort Lauderdale Beach followed by the festival and awards at 6:30p.m. It was a great evening of Island Fun!

invited all sailboat racing and cruising enthusiasts back to the
beautiful waters off Fort Lauderdale Beach to raise funds for HospiceCare
of Southeast Florida, Inc. For the seventh straight year, the Hospice
Regatta, which has grown into an extremely popular event, had sailors
racing and spectators enjoying the atmosphere off Fort Lauderdale
Beach Saturday, May 17, 2003.
The clambake hosted over 800 guests with a Reggae relaxed atmosphere. Adding to the excitement was a silent auction offering private charters, weekend getaways to Aspen, CO, the Cove of the Eleuthera, Bahamas; paintings by famous and local artists and other highly sought after gifts. The auction was coordinated by Caren Bock and Carol Pennington with the help of many HospiceCare volunteers. The silent auction raised over $12,000 for Hospice Hundred, a group that helps educate and inform the community about HospiceCare.
Hospice Regatta
HOSPICE REGATTA 2002 Hospice Regatta 2002, co-chaired by J.D. Thrower and Ned Cray, invited all sailboat racing and cruising enthusiasts back to the beautiful waters off Fort Lauderdale Beach to raise funds for HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc. For the sixth straight year, the Hospice Regatta, which has grown into an extremely popular event for both sailors and "landlubbers" alike, had sails flying under the sunny skies in the waters off Fort Lauderdale Beach Saturday, May 18, 2002 and raised over $60,000.00 for HospiceCare.
Even though the Hospice Regatta provided tough competition on a twenty mile course, it also offered a variety of classes and skill levels to include: a FAMILY CLASS for those who enjoy cruising the seas with a minimum of one child under the age of 12 on board, along with a shorter 12 mile course, a MAIDEN RACERS CLASS for those first time racers and a CRUISING CANVAS CLASS for those yachts who do not ordinarily race and who don't fly a spinnaker. The race is open to professionals, novice or anyone who just enjoys a casual sail.
This year, the Regatta was proud to cheer as 78 teams raced to raise funds for a most worthy cause - care of patients and families facing end of life decisions. Skippers and their crews were given an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the racing rules on Friday, May 17th at the Skipper's Meeting hosted by Cascades Café and Las Olas Riverfront. On Saturday, May 18th all the boats started the race between the Yankee Clipper Sheraton Hotel and Las Olas Boulevard sailing north towards Deerfield and finishing near the start. The New England Clambake following the regatta was held on Esplanade Park and featured Maine lobsters, and other seafood delights, as well as the steel drum band "Nori Nori". The clambake hosted over 700 guests. Adding to the excitement was a silent auction offering cruises, weekend getaways, a Sea Snark boat; paintings by local artists and other highly sought after gifts. The auction was coordinated by Diane Bosler and Caren Bock of Hospice Hundred, Inc., a fund-raising affiliate to HospiceCare of Southeast Florida, Inc.
Some unique awards were added this year. The Yacht Club Challenge, sponsored by the Lauderdale Yacht Club, created healthy competition amongst the participating yacht and sailing clubs. This year's Yacht Club Challenge winner was Gulfstream Sailing Club, an organization that has been involved and supportive of this event since its inception in 1997. Also added to this year's award list was the PHRF Minus Award (a memorial award inspired by Wes Holmes) where boats who raised additional funds prior to the race were able to drop 1.5 seconds per mile from their finish time for every $100.00 they raised. The boats that participated for the PHRF Minus trophy raised well over $15,000.00. Gulf Stream Sailing Club also dedicated the "Wes Holmes Memorial Trophy - Spirit of Hospice" Award, an honor which goes to the highest fundraiser on or off the water. This year the "Spirit of Hospice Award" was awarded to Jim Wallace and his crew from "Contrails" who raised over $3,500.00. The Robert "Skip" Hirschberger Sportsmanship Trophy went to Barbara Widmann of "Sylvester". She raised $2,750.00 for HospiceCare through her enthusiasm for Hospice Care and sailing.
Our last and most "Hip" addition to this year was the Regatta Race Song composed, recorded and performed by Ned Cray. A neat little "ditty" in the spirit of Jimmy Buffet encouraged all participants to "Race to win, race for fun, race for Hospice everyone!" Copies of the song are available on CD for a $10.00 donation to HospiceCare of Southeast Florida.

"We are already working on next year's event. It is only going to get better", said event co-chairman, J.D. Thrower. "We are delighted that the sailing community has rallied around this event. Every year the sailors amaze us! We also owe a great deal of gratitude to our sponsors who have been with us for six years - the North Broward Hospital District, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, Ron Matusalem Rum, our local West Marine, Hugh's Catering, Capt. Last year's event far exceeded our expectations with over 70 boats entered and nearly 700 guests attending the New England Clambake in Esplanade Park. Sailors came from as far as New York and California to sail in the race held offshore between the Yankee Clipper Hotel and Las Olas Boulevard. Our membership in The National Hospice Regatta Alliance made it possible to send a crew to sail in the first-ever National Hospice Regatta Championship in May 2000 at Annapolis, Maryland. The newly featured Family Class, designed for those who enjoy casual sailing will race a 12 mile course around a triangle 3/4 the size of the main course. Again, the Riverside Hotel on Las Olas Boulevard will be the host hotel with special rates to accommodate overnight guests.
