In addition to class trophies, the boats competed for several sponsored trophies that were awarded for both exceptional racing and special fundraising achievements. 2009 sailor fundraising brought in a record amount this year, with over $18,000 raised online alone. Over 350 sailors, sponsors and hospice caregivers attended the post-regatta Shore Party at the Manresa on the Severn, helping to raise almost $200,000 through individual and corporate sponsor donations, along with the annual live-auction, that will help support hospices in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas. The Hospice Class is a special nonspinnaker class for sailors who usually cruise more and race less less. Hospice Cup XXVIII Launches 2009 Online Fund Raising Campaign In 2008, participants in the online fund raising efforts raised over $14,000 – almost double the amount raised in previous years – proving that providing payments online for donors and fund raisers is far easier, and faster, than writing and mailing a check. Hospice Cup, Inc. will continue to encourage and reward fund raising sailors, crew and local sailing clubs with the annual The Hank Lawton Award (sponsored by Hospice of the Chesapeake) for the crew raising the most money; and the Club Fund Raising Award (sponsored by Chuck and Cecilia Thompson) for the sailing club raising the most money as a group. These trophies will be awarded at the post-regatta Shore Party on September 26, 2009. In addition to sailors, volunteer caregivers and those who have been touched by hospice care are also being encouraged to create a personal online fund raising page in memory of a loved one. Each page can contain a photo and personal story about supporting Hospice Cup. The Hospice Cup XXVIII start page is located at http://www.firstgiving.com/hospicecup. Instructions are also available on our web site at www.hospicecup.org. Hospice Cup, Inc. will widen its geographic range of supporting hospices in 2009 as both Calvert Hospice and the Talbot Hospice Foundation return as participants in the annual regatta event that raises funds and awareness for hospices in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas. The Talbot Hospice Foundation, of Easton, MD, was an early participant in the Hospice Cup during the early 1980’s; while Calvert Hospice, located in Prince Frederick, MD, returns after a one-year absence from participating in the annual event. Julie Crocker, Executive Director of the Talbot Hospice Foundation, stated, “We are grateful to have the opportunity to join this collaborative fundraising effort with The Hospice Cup. Our hospice represents a large sailing community, and it makes sense for us to come aboard to raise funds for our Hospice programs in Talbot County.” "Hospice Cup is a wonderful opportunity for hospices around the Chesapeake Bay to collaboratively raise awareness of the hospice mission," stated Lynn Bonde, J.D., MSW Executive Director Calvert Hospice. The 2009 participating hospices currently include: Capital Hospice, Calvert Hospice, “We are very happy to have these two hospices returning to the event,” states Karma O’Neill, executive director of Hospice Cup, Inc. “Their presence as participants will expand the reach of our event to hospice supporters and, of course, more sailors.” ******* Co-Skippers from Annapolis Hospice Cup to Compete in National Championship After uncooperative weather conditions canceled the 2008 Hospice Cup racing, “Contraire” owner Steve Schaub, and co-skippers Curtis Wells and David Ginsburg, qualified for the Hospice Regattas National Championship to be held June 5-7, 2009, on Lake Ontario. Hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (RYC), the championship invites winners of hospice regattas that are members of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance which support over 50 community hospices around the U.S., Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This year, 21 teams will compete for championship honors. The Hospice Cup trophy, presented by the Annapolis-based annual regatta, recognizes sustained high performance of an individual skipper racing three consecutive years, regardless of changed boat, class or partners. The formula allows for circumstances like last fall’s non-race, allowing the Contraire team to be qualified based on their performance during the previous two years. Contraire, registered in the PHRF A3 division, won 1st place in 2006, and 2nd in 2007. “While owner Steve Schaub will not be able to attend the 2009 championship in Rochester, his teammates, Wells and Ginsburg, who have shared duties as co-skipper in the Hospice Cup race for many years, will be representing the Contraire team. The race committee determined they qualify to represent Hospice Cup in the nationals.”states David Hoyt, Commodore of the Shearwater Sailing Club which hosts the annual race committee. Held in Annapolis for many years, this is the first time that Rochester Yacht Club will manage the championship regatta. The championship will be in Rochester for three years, before moving to other locations in order to promote the network of hospice regattas in other areas. Plans for the 2009 Hospice Regattas National Championship call for racing in 12 new Sonar sailboats outfitted with new sails, in a round-robin series that will maximize time on the water for all teams over the three-day competition. The Sonar, a 23-ft. one-design keelboat, races competitively with a skipper and three crew. Each suit of new sails will include a spinnaker, a main, and a jib small enough to be handled by nearly any size crew member.
Hospice Cup XXVII [Annapolis, MD] Despite foul weather and failing economy the sun was shining brightly on the Hospice Cup XXVII fundraising regatta, held on Saturday, September 27, which raised over $350,000 towards area participating hospices. Over 80 sailboats and 360 sailors braved two hours of motoring around in hard rain and deteriorating visibility waiting for race committees to start or cancel the race. After it was finally called off at 12:30 pm, the boats headed back to their ports, and the sailors moved on to the Shore Party, held at the Atria Manresa overlooking the Severn River and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The sun peeked through the clouds in time for the Shore Party, which was attended by over 350 donors, caregivers, hospice volunteers and sailors - proof that support of hospice care was the important mission of the day. The turn to fair weather also gave the annual live auction a lift, which raised over $21,000. “Just like life, the organizers and volunteers of the Hospice Cup XXVII overcame many challenges – from dealing with rain and mud and finding straw for the ground and additional parking in time for the event – to ensure all ran smoothly. Despite these issues, there was a huge turnout at the shore party, and the event sailed on,” stated Executive Director of Hospice Cup, Inc., Karma O’Neill. Honorary Co-Chairs of the 2008 event were, Len and Dale Adler, on behalf of Capital Hospice; and Jim Mandrin and W. Dennis Gilligan on behalf of Hospice of the Chesapeake. At the party, Len Adler honored accomplished sailor, past Chair, and While trophies for racers were not awarded this year, top sailor and club fundraisers were well recognized, as a record amount of over $13,500 was raised. The Hank Lawton Trophy for Top Crew Fundraising, sponsored by Hospice of the Chesapeake, in honor the top fundraiser, was presented to Angelo Guarino of Severna Park, MD, of Bella Donna who raised over $6,000. Hospice Cup XXVl Hospice Cup XXVII – America’s Largest Charity Regatta – to be Held September 27, 2008, in Annapolis, Maryland The race marks twenty-seven years of racing to raise funds to support Hospice programs in local communities around the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas. [Annapolis, MD] The Hospice Cup XXVII – America's largest charity regatta – will be on Saturday, September 27, 2008. Entering its 27th year of racing on the Chesapeake Bay, to date the Hospice Cup has raised over $7 million to support Hospice programs in local communities around the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas. In 2007, over $440,000 was raised by Hospice Cup XXVI sponsors, donors and participating fundraising sailing teams. Fundraising for the Hospice Cup is structured to ensure that funds are generated on behalf of each of the participating Hospices. The annual Hospice Cup race is a cooperative effort. It is organized by the all-volunteer Hospice Cup, Inc. (HCI) Board of Directors, an Executive Director, area hospices and hundreds of other volunteers. The race is managed by Shearwater Sailing Club, assisted by Storm Trysail Club Chesapeake Station. Hospice Cup Executive Director Karma O’Neill states, "Plans for this year's Hospice Cup are underway. For 2008 we are planning new activities that promote awareness of Hospice Care and celebrate the Regatta's fundraising efforts. Additionally, we are hoping to attract new participants from the many Chesapeake Bay boat and social clubs to join in the Regatta” Hospice Cup President Cullen Murray states, “We are grateful to the sailors, our donors, our board members, the participating hospices, and the many volunteers that help to make this event possible. With the dedicated support of every individual, the funds we’ve raised during the past 27 years have infinitely helped area hospices to give their patients, and their caregivers, the support and comfort they need to ensure quality end-of-life care.” The Hospice Cup race serves as the local qualifying race for the National Hospice Regatta Championship. Winners from each of the twenty-four hospice regattas from around the United States compete annually and are all members of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance. The championship race for the 2007 qualifiers will be held May 9-11, 2008, in Annapolis, Maryland. Supporting Hospice Cup means that there will continue to be no out-of-pocket expenses for any patient or family seeking the services of one of the participating hospices. Hospice Cup funds help pay the 25 to 30 percent of the expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance. These dollars enable the hospices to provide skilled compassionate care, comfort and dignity to the terminally ill, their families and friends, regardless of their ability to pay. Hospice enables patients to carry on alert, pain-free lives so their last days may be spent in comfort, at home or in home-like settings. Hospice care concentrates on care, not cure. Bereavement counseling and support groups are part of hospice services after the loss of a loved one. The 2008 participating hospices which include: Hospice of the Chesapeake, Capital Hospice, Montgomery Hospice, Calvert Hospice, and Community Hospices, must meet the standards of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Hospice Cup, Inc. is a proud member of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance, www.hospiceregattas.org. The Hospice Cup is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) and counts for CBYRA season-long High Point competition. Hospice Cup, Inc. is a non-profit organization chartered under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia for the purposes of conducting a benefit yacht race and related events. Net proceeds are disbursed to the participating hospices on a pro-rated basis.

HOSPICE CUP FACTS Twelve classes of racing boats -- handicap and Cruising One Design, plus the special Hospice Class for sailors who do not usually race but want to show support for hospice care. Over 600 sponsors and their guests on three spectator boats were
treated to a day on the Bay watching the huge fleet, and a grand
Shore Party with the sailors to wrap up the day. Most classes had windward-leeward courses, 10 miles for the larger boats and 6 miles for smaller ones. The Multihull boats and the Hospice Class had an 8.1 mile course around government marks. Race starts were delayed almost an hour as racers battled chop and wind to reach the starting area. The southerly wind was about 15 knots most of the day, but seas were choppy from several days of wind from the same direction. All classes had a brisk race. At this time, final results are pending a hearing on one protest affecting two classes (noted by a "P" in the right margin). Sailors not asked to raise money, just sail. New this year, however, was the opportunity for sailors to solicit sponsorships. The first winner of the Hospice Cup Crew Fundraising Award is Angelo Guarino, crew member aboard the Cal 25 Calibre, skippered by Ed Nusbickel. Sponsors direct their contributions to one or more of the four participating hospices. The hospices are the Hospice of Queen Anne's, on the Eastern Shore; Montgomery Hospice; Hospice of the Chesapeake; and The Hospices of the National Capital Region. Shearwater Sailing Club provides the class trophies and donates net race proceeds to Hospice Cup. SPONSORED TROPHIES The first of the special sponsored trophies goes to 1st place in Hospice Class. The Martin F. McCarthy Trophy, sponsored by family and friends of Martin F. McCarthy, was announced by Ann Mitchell, Director of Montgomery Hospice. It will be presented to Vicki Saporta, skipper of Pleiades. Within the Hospice Class are boats that have Hospice Caregivers
as crew. The Lovelace/Sniegon Memorial Trophy is for the best performing
boat with a Hospice Caregiver aboard, was presented by Bill and
Rose Lovelace to Vicki Saporta, skipper of Pleiades. The oldest sponsored trophy is the Ralph A. Beeton Trophy, for
superior helmsmanship on a U.S. Naval Academy boat. Sponsored by
First Virginia Banks, the trophy was presented by Patti DeBuck,
of The Hospices of the National Capital Region, to Midshipman Kerry
Scivcheky who was the helmsperson about the Academy yacht Bold. A special trophy for local sailors is the Cathy Hartman Memorial Trophy for the foredeck crew of the winner in the PHRF A0 class. Sponsored by friends of Cathy Hartman, the trophy was announced by Bill Steitz for whom Cathy Hartman crewed. The winner is Rick Deppe, foredeck aboard Chessie. The 1999 Honorary Chairman Pat Sajak and his wife Lesly really got involved, and are sponsoring the Sajak Family Foundation Trophy for best performance in the Cruising One-Design classes. Dick Ladd, President of Hospice Cup, Inc., announced the winner, Jack Biddle, skipper of Rum Puppy. Usually The Hospice Cup trophy is the capstone of the awards ceremony.
Awarded for sustained performance in three consecutive years, the
winner was not announced at the Shore Party because the outcome
may have been been affected by pending protests. That is no longer
the case. The winner is David Sliom, who raced his boat Dancing
Bear more consistently well in the Hospice Cup races of
1999, 2000 and 2002 than any other skipper. The trophy will be awarded
in a special ceremony, and David will be invited to compete in the
2003 National Hospice Regatta Championship against winners from
the 16 other hospice regattas that took place this year nationwide.
