The Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta was held on a beautiful and breezy day at the Muskegon Yacht Club. Twenty three boats sailed in the competition. The overall winner was Peerless, skippered by Brian Torresen.
Sponsorship was the key to raising $20,000 in the third year of this event. Major sponsors include the following: Torresen Marine, Inc., Hines Corporation, Trophy House – Jones Sports, Leila Poppen Reynolds, and The Muskegon Chronicle.
For the first time, skippers and crew got pledges for their boats in what we titled the Judy Miller Memorial Challenge. Judy was a founding member of our Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta Committee. This effort was very successful and promises growth in years to come. This year’s winner of the challenge: The crew of ‘Wooly Bully’ skippered by Gary and Cassy Marchido.
More than 150 people enjoyed a Pig Roast that followed the Awards Ceremony.
It was the second year of the Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta with more boats racing, more sponsors sponsoring, and continued great hospitality from the Muskegon Yacht Club. Twenty seven boats sailed on July 5th and the overall winner was Ticklish, skippered by Eric Landman.

Harbor Hospice Chronicle Cup Regatta
July 5, 2008
Twenty five boats participated in the first-ever Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta on July 5, 2008 at the Muskegon Yacht Club on Muskegon Lake. The winner: Rapid Sequence, a Melges 24.
The July 6th article in the Muskegon Chronicle, our Regatta partner, reported: The crew of Rapid Sequence had just completed a “three-peat” in the Harbor Hospice Chronicle Cup when the talk shifted to getting a fourth in a row. “This was really great, but next year we really want to win,” explained Tim O’Neill, whose four-person crew got off to a great start and never made a mistake in winning the 67th annual race. Winning No. 4 should be an even bigger challenge as, thanks to the Chronicle’s new partnership with Harbor Hospice, the winning boat at next year’s race will qualify for the 2010 Hospice Regattas National Championship.
The first boat to finish was Windancer, a big SC-70 which traveled the buoyed course in 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 42 seconds. Once the time was corrected, with the handicap format, Windancer took second behind Rapid Sequence. Aftershock, a J-35 took third overall, followed by Trim, an Express 27 in fourth.
The event’s major sponsor was Torresen Marine, Inc. who with twenty other sponsors, helped Harbor Hospice raise more than $10,000 in this first year.
The first Harbor Hospice Regatta came in our twenty-fifth anniversary year. Throughout the anniversary festivities, people were asked to sign the sail in memory of a loved one. This small sail carries a lot of heart.
