Willard Bond Fellow/American Society Marine
Artists
Each year for the past decade, renowned marine artist Willard
Bond and the Arnold
Art Gallery have made available one Bond image for hospice
regattas. Many of the regattas have benefited, using these vibrant
images on posters, t-shirts and other commemorative items.
Few artists can effectively portray the power and dramatic excitement
of racing sailboats. Willard Bond paints in bold strokes of brilliant
watercolor or oil, and both avid sailors and veteran visual artists
are impressed with the result. In this art of the sea , as Bond
calls his work, he captures the thrill of speeding movement in
a fantastic celebration of painterly technique.
Willard Bond has embraced a variety of experiences in his colorful
career. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he moved on to
theater work in Manhattan and then built geodesic domes inspired
by Buckminster Fuller in Jamaica with the Peace Corps. But throughout
all the diverse experiences, painting remained Bond s consuming
and enduring passion. In the late 1970 s, his work hit a new level
of success. For the first time, he painted large watercolors of
modern racing yachts. These paintings have launched Bond into
an elite band of marine artists, sought by serious collectors
throughout the world.
With his artwork in demand, Willard Bond enjoys his life, his
work, his dog, and the opportunities each day brings. Born in
the Pacific Northwest in 1926, he now lives on a mountaintop in
New York state. He also spends a great deal of time traveling
with representatives from Arnold Art to sell his work at boat
shows and relishes the chance to race with friends.
